GUI harmonization for CALM from DEUTZ AG

In spring 2023, CONZE supported DEUTZ AG in harmonizing the user interface of its in-house application “CALM”—a data set management tool for engine development. By implementing individual corporate design elements, replacing icons, and creating reusable styles in the code, it was possible to harmonize the GUI with a facelift effect in a short period of time. To drive forward the harmonization of the CALM user interface, a style guide was first developed. This was based on screen designs of the CALM main view and individual dialogs, which were created in accordance with consistent rules for colors, sizes, spacing, and alignment. In addition, individual corporate design elements were defined to ensure that DEUTZ AG is recognizable in the application. The feasibility of the style guide was continuously coordinated and reviewed with the development team to ensure efficient implementation.Based on the style guide, the entire user interface of the DEUTZ CALM application was revised. This includes almost 40 views, consisting of the main view and several dialogs, which vary in complexity. The specified guidelines were implemented, the corporate design elements were incorporated, and several reusable styles were created in the code (buttons, text boxes, data grids, etc.). This greatly simplified the future expansion of the CALM application with additional features and functions. To give the harmonization of the UI a final facelift effect, the old icons were replaced with new ones. To achieve this, a modern icon style was designed in collaboration with a design agency. The result is a custom icon set of approximately 140 icons in a modern “outlined style” with individual color variations. The icons were initially delivered in ICO format to enable easy replacement of the old ICO files in the code. In a second step, all icons were provided as SVG files to pave the way for a future switch to the more flexible format. We would like to thank everyone involved and are very happy about the successful and “harmonious” project!
